Handmade in Topeka, Kansas

Built from the
Heartland Up

PlainsCraft covered wagons are made by people who grew up with a genuine love of the land, pioneer history, and the American West.

Founded by Dennis and Donna Steinman, PlainsCraft designs and handcrafts premium covered wagons for outdoor hospitality providers, glamping resorts, private landowners, and anyone who wants to give guests an experience they will never forget. Every wagon is built in our shop in Topeka, Kansas — not far from where the Oregon Trail first began.

Where it started

A Kansas Kid
and a Dream

Dennis Steinman grew up in the rural heartland of Kansas — a true child of the country, with a love of pioneer history that never left him. As a kid, he rode in wagons built by his father. As an adult, he spent decades building a thriving electronics manufacturing company. But the wagons stayed with him.

Donna grew up in Oklahoma, where the western lifestyle was still a living remnant of the pioneer movement. The two shared a vision: bring authentic covered wagons back to life, not as relics, but as real accommodations that people could sleep in and experience firsthand.

In 2018, Dennis and Donna created their first functional designs. PlainsCraft was born from a genuine passion for the American frontier — and a belief that the magic of the covered wagon still had a place in the modern world.

PlainsCraft today

Built in Kansas.
Found Everywhere.

Today PlainsCraft is a small, proud company based in Topeka, Kansas — handcrafting a unique piece of Americana in the heartland, not far from where the Oregon Trail first set out. Every wagon is built in our shop using wood from US factories and as many Kansas-sourced materials as we can find.

Our wagons look and feel like authentic, full-sized covered wagons — the ones that traversed the Midwestern plains for over a hundred years. But inside, guests find everything they need for a comfortable, memorable stay. The magic of the wagon, delivered with modern comfort.

From a single landowner adding their first glamping unit to multi-site resort developers building out a full concept, PlainsCraft works with every type and scale of outdoor hospitality operator. We build to your needs, your style, and your guests. And we genuinely care whether it works for you.

What We Stand For

Four things that have been true since Dennis and Donna built their first wagon — and still shape every unit that leaves our shop.

Craftsmanship

Handmade in Kansas using US-sourced materials. Rigorous quality at every step — because guests feel the difference between something built right and something built fast.

Authenticity

We build covered wagons because we love them. That’s not a marketing line. It comes through in the design, the materials, and the attention we put into every detail.

Owner Success

We build wagons for the people buying them, not just the guests sleeping in them. If it doesn’t work for your business, it doesn’t work for us either.

Partnership

We work closely with every operator. Your goals, your site, your guests. We’re not a vendor — we’re the people who want to see your property succeed.
